The Paramus Fire Department was dispatched just after 7:00 PM to the Tom Sawyer Diner at 98 East Ridgewood Ave. after people inside reported hearing an explosion in the basement and smoke began to fill the dining area. First arriving units found a heavy smoke condition throughout with all of the customers safely evacuated.

Why join IAFF Local 68?

LOCAL 68 belongs to its members.  The Local is not a dictatorship or corporation and the members are not stockholders.  Union members elect the Local’s officers and the members decide how the organization operates.  Every member has the right and the opportunity to participate. We have regular membership meetings every 2nd Thursday at the Union Hall at 7:30 PM where any member can express his/her views on issues regarding their employment or the operation of the Local.  And bring these issues to a vote on the meeting floor.  We do not hold union meetings at the galley table!!!!  The Local provides Firefighters with a voice regarding their employment.  The city isn't always fair or right!  The Local is your means to address fairness issues in the workplace.  Through the Local’s officers each worker has the right to speak out for himself or his fellow workers on issues that effect our safety, employment, working conditions or benefits.  If the administration violates a person's rights under the city ordinances or state or federal laws, we have the opportunity discuss these issues with the administration or if necessary, to use the process known as the grievance procedure, to correct the violation.  Being a member of Local 68 also enables firefighters to address workplace issues through other means: setting up meetings with supervisors, supporting a coworker in time of distress or change a policy that members think is unfair.  The Local allows Firefighters to obtain better salaries, retirement, health insurance and benefits packages as well as safer working conditions.  Wages and benefits such as health insurance, retirement, paid holidays, and vacations are not simply given to us by the city.  Union and administration representatives sit down and we lobby for wages and benefits as part of the overall budget negotiation process.  All one has to do is look at how the General Employees have lagged behind Fire, Police and Education when it comes to the city budget to understand this concept.  Because of your membership in Local 68 YOU have a greater degree of job security than folks who are non-Union.  Once a fire recruit makes it through the probationary period, the member has rights granted to them through State and Federal Laws and City Ordinances.  These rights are a check against the administration’s ability to use favoritism or to discipline unfairly.  Again, few officers treat their employees unfairly, but those that do have a harder time of it, due to the enforcement of existing city policies.  For example, a member cannot be arbitrarily disciplined and the Local makes sure that every member is treated fairly and per city policy and has access to due process.  This includes the use of the Local’s attorney and resources of not only Local 68, the VPFF, but also the IAFF to secure a fair outcome for them.  But you know, in order for us to be successful, we can’t be out there alone, we need YOU!  Come to the next Union Meeting and see where you can be part of the team!!!!!

Remember in Unity there is Strength!!!!

What is the IAFF Local 68 all about?

The seat of the fire was found to be in the basement with the flames extending upwards. A rush call was made to the utilities because it was believed the fire was gas fed.

A third alarm was transmitted, now bringing mutual aid from Washington Twp., Oradell, and Fair Lawn to the scene. Firefighters dug at the curb to attempt to shut the gas off at the street, but before that could be accomplished, the first floor dining area flashed on the west side of the diner. Heavy fire vented through the windows as a couple of handlines tried to keep the flames in check, but due to the gas still flowing, the fire still free burned in the basement.

You will be Welcome!
